This app is a private map of the people you know. This page says what it collects, who sees it, who else handles it, how long it is kept, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and a password or an emailed sign‑in code.
- What you put in your map: names, photos, phone numbers, emails, birthdays, where people live, how you know them, what they need, what they can help with, groups, families, notes and history entries, and dates.
- Your profile: your name, photo, city, state, and what you can help with and could use help with.
- Chat messages you send to the assistant and its replies.
- Your answers to the questions the app asks you, and anything you write with them. They go to the person who makes the app.
- How the app is used: which screens and buttons your account uses, as a name and a time, and any error the app runs into (the message, the screen, the app version and the browser).
- Requests you post on the "Ask for something" board, and your votes. Other members see the words of a request, not who wrote it.
- Technical records: server logs with IP addresses and device and browser details, to keep the app secure, prevent fraud and abuse, fix problems, and understand how the app is used.
We and the companies that work for us (listed below) use cookies and similar tools to keep you signed in, remember your choices, and measure how the app and website are used. We don't let advertisers track you across other companies' apps and websites.
We don't sell or share your personal information, as California law defines those terms, and we don't use it for advertising.
Do Not Track. Browsers can send a 'Do Not Track' signal. There's no common standard for it, so the app doesn't respond to it.
Who sees what
Your notes and history entries and the names of the people on your map are shown only to you. The words you use for what they need or can help with are shown to your friends, with counts, as described below. In You, you can choose to show what you're looking for, what you can help with and your birthday to whoever invited you. Each one stays hidden until you turn it on, and nobody else sees it.
Friends. When you and another member agree to be friends, each of you sees the other's name and how many people the other keeps. When you send someone an invitation or your link, they see your name, your city and state, and how many people you keep, so they can decide whether to say yes. You also see the words the other uses for what their people need and can help with, and how many people have each one (for example, "plumber: 3"). Counts show only from three up. Fewer than three shows nothing, so nobody can be picked out by a small number. Words about health, addiction, pregnancy, sex, religion, immigration, criminal history, debt, grief, adoption or custody, and housing or safety are never counted. They stay on your own map. You never see the names, contact details or notes and history entries of the people on a friend's map. Either of you can end it in Connect. If a friend asks the assistant which friends know someone who can help, your name as they know you, your need and offer words, and their counts are sent to Anthropic to answer. Names of the people on your map are never sent.
If you share your link, anyone who opens it sees your first name and photo. When you send a friend request, the person you ask sees your name, photo, city and state, and how many people you keep.
You are responsible for what you record about others. Keep it to what you would be comfortable with them reading. Do not record health, religion, politics, orientation, or immigration status about anyone unless they told you and would not mind.
People on your map who aren't members
Members can add details about people they know. Those details are visible only to the member who added them, except the words for what they need or can help with, which that member's friends see with counts, from three up. If that member uses the assistant, the parts of their map it needs, which can include those details, are sent to Anthropic to answer. We don't contact them ourselves, and we never sell their details or use them for advertising. We use their details to run the app for the member who added them, to keep the app secure, and, only in counts that don't name anyone, to understand and improve how the app is used. Details that came from a phone's contacts or from Google are used only for that member's map. If you believe you're on someone's map and have a question, email support@knowthemwell.com.
The assistant
When you use the assistant, your message and the parts of your map it needs are sent to Anthropic to be understood and answered. The assistant asks your permission first, and you can withdraw it in You, under Membership.
Your iPhone's contacts
In the iPhone app, if you choose to bring in your contacts, the iPhone asks your permission first. The app then reads each contact's name, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, birthday, workplace and job title, and photo. It does not read the notes on a contact. You choose which of them go on your map, and only those are saved. They are used only for your own private map: never shown to other members, never sold, never used for advertising, and nobody is contacted from them. If you tick "Also save to my phone's contacts" when you add someone, the app saves that person's name to your iPhone's contacts; nothing is saved there without the tick. You can take the permission back at any time in the iPhone's Settings, under Know Them Well.
Google contacts
If you choose "From Google Contacts", Google asks your permission, and the app is allowed to read your contacts. It asks only for that: it cannot see your email, calendar, files or anything else, and it cannot change or delete any contact.
What it reads: each contact's name, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, birthday, workplace and job title, notes and photo.
How it is used: only to put those people on your own private map, so you can see and look after the people you know. A contact already on your map gains what was missing; anyone you deleted is left out. The app keeps a sign‑in key from Google so it can read your contacts again when you ask it to, and it reads them only when you tap to bring them in.
Who it is shared with: nobody else sees them. They are never sold, never shown to other members, and never used for advertising. They are stored by Supabase and handled by the server on Railway, which work for us to run the app and use the data for nothing else. If you use the assistant, the parts of your map it needs to answer you, which can include people who came from Google, are sent to Anthropic to be answered, and only after you give the assistant permission.
How it is protected: everything travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and the database and photo storage are encrypted on disk. Each member's map is walled off in the database, so one member's data cannot be read by another's account. The sign‑in key from Google is kept on the server only and never sent to your phone or anywhere else.
No AI training. Data from Google is never used to create, train or improve any artificial intelligence or machine learning model, ours or anyone else's. Under its terms with us, Anthropic does not train its models on what the assistant sends it. The use of raw or derived user data received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Stopping it: remove Know Them Well's access at any time at myaccount.google.com/connections. People already brought in stay on your map until you delete them. Deleting your account removes them and the key from Google.
Your mailing address
If you give us your mailing address, we use it to send you mail from Know Them Well, like a founding welcome letter. Our team sees your name, signup date and address so it can send that mail. We keep your address while you're a member and delete it when you close your account or ask us to. We never sell it.
Your calendar
If you connect a calendar, we read your events to find meetings with people already in your map. For anyone else at the meeting, we keep only a count, not their name or email. We keep matched meetings while your account is open, and we delete all calendar data when you disconnect your calendar or close your account.
If you add routines, like a weekly meeting or service, we keep their names and times so we can remind you afterward. Only you can see them, and you can delete them anytime.
Know Them Well's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Connecting an AI app
If you connect an AI app, it can search and read your own people and notes, add people and notes, link your people to each other and, when you confirm, merge two of your people who are the same person, and add meetings to your Know Them Well calendar. It sees your friends' networks only as counts, never names, and it can never contact anyone. What it reads goes to the AI app you chose and is handled under that app's own terms. You can disconnect it at any time.
Who else handles the data
- Supabase stores the database, photos and the daily backups.
- Railway runs the server.
- Stripe holds your plan: your email and the card you add.
- Anthropic processes your messages to the assistant, the parts of your map it needs, and your friends' need and offer words with counts when you ask about friends, only with your permission. Anthropic deletes what it receives from the assistant within 30 days. If its automated safety checks flag something as breaking its usage rules, it may keep that for up to 2 years and its safety scores for up to 7 years, and it keeps anything the law requires. It doesn't train its models on any of it.
- Apple delivers notifications to the iPhone app: the text of each note and a code for your phone.
- Resend delivers the app's emails.
- Have I Been Pwned checks a new password against passwords already leaked elsewhere. Only the first five characters of a scrambled copy are sent.
- Google, only if you connect Google Contacts to import your own contacts.
Where it lives and how long
Data is stored in the United States. When you use the assistant, Anthropic may process your messages in other countries to answer them, and anything it keeps is stored in the United States. Here is how long we keep each kind:
- Your account, map, notes, photos, profile, chats with the assistant, your answers, and requests and votes: while you have an account.
- How the app is used and error reports: while you have an account. Counts and statistics that can't be tied back to you may be kept after that, and we won't try to re-identify them.
- Server logs with IP addresses: up to 30 days, for security and to fix problems.
- Your mailing address, if you joined by invitation: while you have an account (see "Your mailing address").
- Backups: daily copies are kept 30 days, then overwritten.
When you delete your account, everything above is deleted within 45 days of your request, and backup copies expire within 30 more days. Some records are kept after deletion because the law requires them or allows them for security (see "What we keep after you delete your account").
Deleted data may remain in our private backups for up to 30 days until those backups are overwritten. We don't restore it except to recover from a system failure.
People you delete from your map stay in our records while you have your account, so they can be brought back, and go when your account does.
What other members wrote about you in their own maps is theirs. It stays after you delete your account, but it's no longer linked to you.
What we keep after you delete your account
When your account is deleted, we keep only these records: what you paid for (amounts, dates and receipt numbers, no card details) for seven years, for taxes; a record of what you agreed to and of your request to delete, for as long as we may need it to show what was agreed or asked if a question ever comes up; security logs for up to 30 days; and anything the law requires us to preserve, for as long as it requires. We may also keep statistics that can't be tied back to you. What other members wrote in their own maps stays theirs.
Your choices
- Change your own details on your profile.
- Turn off the assistant in You, under Membership.
- Delete your account from You, under Membership. You'll have 45 days to change your mind, then everything is deleted, except the records listed under 'What we keep after you delete your account.'
Children
You must be 16 or older to have an account.
